Sahara Morocco & Merzouga Guide

Plan a desert trip without guesswork: how many nights to allow, what the Erg Chebbi experience is really like, how to choose a camp and what to pack.

Minimum: 2 nights in the regionBest for: landscapes & stargazingLong road transfersPack for temperature shifts

The Sahara is not a quick attraction between cities. The journey is part of the experience, and a good plan leaves enough time for the dunes, the night sky, the road and the people who make the desert route work.

01 · Start with the right expectations

THE JOURNEY

Allow time

Merzouga is far from Marrakech and Fès. A rushed overnight can turn the desert into a bus stop.

THE CAMP

Read the details

Compare location, transfer method, bathroom setup, meals and group size—not only the tent photos.

THE CONDITIONS

Prepare well

The desert can be hot by day and cold at night. Layers, water and sun protection matter.

02 · When to visit and how long to stay

Spring and autumn are comfortable for most travellers. Winter nights can be cold, while summer heat is intense. Plan at least two nights in the Merzouga area and more if driving from Marrakech.

Our practical rule: separate the long road journey from the actual desert experience. If your schedule is tight, start from Fès or use a route with a well-planned overnight stop.

03 · Where to stay

Choose between a hotel in Merzouga, a simple desert camp and a more comfortable luxury camp. Ask exactly how far the camp is from the dunes and how luggage is transferred.

04 · Arrival and getting around

Most travellers arrive by organised circuit, private driver or rental car. The final desert transfer may be by 4×4, camel or another local arrangement; confirm timing and luggage in advance.

05 · The essential Sahara & Merzouga experience

Watch the dunes at sunrise and sunset, spend time on foot rather than treating camel trekking as the entire experience, and look up after dark when the sky is clear.

06 · A realistic 3-day outline

Day 01

Arrive in the dunes

Reach Merzouga, settle into the camp or hotel and keep sunset free for the first light across Erg Chebbi.

Day 02

Desert rhythm

Choose a sunrise walk, village or nomad-related visit, music and a slower afternoon before stargazing.

Day 03

Depart with a buffer

Leave early for the next stop and keep realistic road time; do not schedule a same-day flight from the desert region.

07 · Mistakes to avoid

Booking only by photograph

Camp access, bathrooms, heating and transfer logistics shape the experience more than décor.

Underestimating road time

Map the whole route and protect your final departure day with a buffer.

Packing for daytime only

Bring warm layers, closed shoes, lip balm, water protection and a small overnight bag.

How many nights should you spend in Merzouga?

Two nights in the area is a sensible minimum; the wider route often needs four to six days.

Is the Sahara cold at night?

It can be, especially outside summer. Confirm camp heating and pack warm layers.
