Imperial city · first-time guide

Fès Travel Guide

A practical guide to Morocco’s most atmospheric imperial city: the living medina, artisan quarters, madrasas, food culture and the easiest way to plan your first meaningful stay.

Ideal stay: 2–3 nightsBest for: history & foodWalkable medinaPlan around the heat

Fès rewards curiosity more than speed. Give the old city time, accept that the lanes are intentionally confusing, and build your days around a few neighbourhoods instead of chasing every landmark.

01 · Start with the right expectations

THE MEDINA

Start early

The souks and monuments are calmer in the morning, before the narrow lanes become busiest.

THE RHYTHM

Slow down

A riad base and a flexible plan make the medina feel fascinating rather than exhausting.

THE FOOD

Eat locally

Fès is one of Morocco’s best cities for patient, traditional meals and regional specialities.

02 · When to visit and how long to stay

Spring and autumn are comfortable for walking, while winter can bring cool evenings and summer requires early starts. Two full days covers the medina and major monuments; three nights gives you room for gardens, food and a slower neighbourhood day.

Our practical rule: choose a riad inside or just outside the medina, book your first arrival transfer, and keep one morning open for simply following the city’s craft and food trail.

03 · Where to stay

Medina riads are best for atmosphere and access, Ville Nouvelle is easier for cars and modern services, and the Mellah or southern edge can work well for travellers who want a quieter base. Read the detailed stay guide before booking.

04 · Arrival and getting around

Fès–Saïss Airport is outside the centre and the medina is not car-friendly. Arrange a drop-off near your riad, then use petit taxis or walking for the rest of the visit.

05 · The essential Fès experience

Begin at Bab Boujloud, follow the lanes toward the Bou Inania and Al Attarine madrasas, look down over the tanneries from a respectful viewpoint, and leave time for artisan workshops and a rooftop sunset.

06 · A realistic 3-day outline

Day 01

The medina core

Enter through Bab Boujloud, explore the main souks and visit the city’s most important madrasas before dinner.

Day 02

Craft, food and viewpoints

Slow down around the tanneries, Nejjarine and artisan quarters, then finish with a cooking or food experience.

Day 03

Gardens or a wider horizon

Choose the Merenid Tombs, a garden morning or a nearby excursion instead of overloading the old city.

07 · Mistakes to avoid

Trying to see everything

Fès is layered and dense. Group nearby sights and accept that wandering is part of the itinerary.

Choosing the wrong arrival point

Cars cannot enter most medina lanes. Confirm the nearest accessible gate with your accommodation.

Rushing meals

The city’s food culture deserves time. Reserve a proper dinner rather than eating every meal in transit.
