Marrakech Airport (RAK) to Medina & Gueliz: Transport Guide, Taxi Fares & Scam Prevention
Landing at Marrakech Menara is sensory magic, but navigating arrivals is notoriously intense. Between non-metered solicitations, shifting quotes, and the pedestrian labyrinth of the Medina, here is the exact logistical playbook to arrive smoothly at your riad without overpaying.
Indicative Fares
Taxi fares from the official rank are posted on a board and reported by travelers at roughly 70–150 MAD (~$7–$15 USD / €7–€14), depending on the zone (sources vary, so confirm on the posted board). However, drivers at the arrivals curb routinely quote 200–300 MAD.
Solo budget traveler? Take Bus 19 (about 30 MAD). Landing after dusk, traveling with bags, or staying deep in the alleys? Reserve a pre-booked transfer (€15–€20) with Medina porter rendezvous to bypass airport negotiation entirely.

What Should You Pay Right Now?
Calculate the legally regulated daytime and nighttime fares for your party size and destination neighborhood.
(approx. €7–€14 / $7–$15 USD)
Luggage is normally included in the fare; agree on this before you get in.
Pay cash in MAD; always carry small bills (20, 50, 100 MAD). Avoid 200 MAD notes.
If the driver asks for more than the posted fare: Politely say “La, choukran” and step to the posted board.
Step-by-Step Arrival Walkthrough: Landing at RAK
Follow this proven terminal timeline from touching down on the tarmac to taking your first sip of mint tea in your riad courtyard.
Pass Through Immigration
Since 2019, Morocco discontinued paper arrival cards for air entries; you simply hand over your physical passport (must be valid for at least 6 months). Lines can range from 15 minutes to 75 minutes during peak European flight banks (11:00 to 16:00). Keep your riad address handy—officers frequently ask where you are staying.
Est: 25–60 mins depending on runway queue.
Baggage Hall: Free Tourist SIMs & Direct Bank ATMs
Inside the baggage claim area, you will encounter telecom counters: Maroc Telecom (best nationwide coverage, essential for Atlas & Desert journeys), Orange, and Inwi. SIM cards are sold at airport kiosks (bring your passport for registration); data bundles cost roughly 50 MAD (~$5) for 5GB.
Always select “Continue Without Conversion” at the ATM screen so your home bank sets the real exchange rate.
Bypassing the Arrival Hall Touts
When sliding through automatic glass doors into the main public concourse, unofficial drivers will ask “Taxi, monsieur? Taxi, madame?”. Do not negotiate or engage here. Unofficial drivers do not operate under the regulated municipal fare sheet and will often quote several times the posted fare. Walk straight through the glass exterior doors into the open plaza.
Never follow anyone who approaches you inside the terminal claiming to be the “official coordinator”.
Locate the Price Board at the Rank
Walk 70 meters straight past the terminal exit awning toward the designated taxi queue. Look for the large metallic tariff display board. It shows the fare for each destination. Read it before you talk to any driver; figures quoted online (roughly 70–150 MAD) vary and change over time.
Before your luggage is loaded into the boot, look the driver in the eye and say clearly: “Le prix affiché pour la Médina, d’accord ?” (the posted price for the Medina, agreed?). If they insist on 200 MAD, point directly at the board. If they still refuse, politely move to the next taxi in line.
“Kmsin dirham” (fifty dirhams), “Sab’in dirham” (seventy dirhams).
Arriving at the Gates & Meeting the Handcart Porter
Crucial fact for first-timers: vehicles cannot enter the inner Medina streets. Your taxi or private driver will drop you at the closest gate (‘Bab’) or vehicle turn-around point (e.g., Bab Doukkala, Bab Aylan, Place des Ferblantiers, or Riad Laarouss).
Staying in a riad in Mouassine or Bab Doukkala? Review riad acoustics, door-to-door access, and luggage tips in our Where to Stay in Marrakech Guide.
At these gates, you will see local men with wooden two-wheel carts (called kroussa). If you arranged a transfer or notified your riad, a riad staff member will be waiting to meet you. If hiring an independent porter, agree on the fee beforehand: 20–30 MAD total per cart (not per bag). They will wheel your luggage through the derbs right to the heavy cedar riad door.
A 20–30 MAD gratuity is generous and deeply appreciated by the local neighborhood porter.
Everything to Know About Bus 19
Operated by ALSA, Bus 19 is an efficient, air-conditioned bus that runs between RAK Airport and the center of Marrakech every 20–30 minutes between 06:00 and 23:30.
Exit terminal, walk 50m left across the vehicle lane. The marked bus stop has a covered shelter and ALSA timetable sign.
About 30 MAD single or 50 MAD return, if available (keep your ticket receipt and ask the driver about validity).
Primary Key Stops:
Hivernage (Avenue Echouhada) – for luxury hotels (Mövenpick, Sofitel, Royal Mansour).
Bab Doukkala – Northwestern Medina gate, ideal for northern Medina riads and central bus station.
Jemaa el-Fnaa (Place de Foucauld stop) – Southern gate to central square; 2 min walk to Medina entry.
Gueliz Train Station (Gare de Marrakech) – for onward ONCF train connections to Casablanca, Rabat, or Tangier.
When NOT to take Bus 19
If your party has 3 or more people, a petit taxi or a pre-booked car can end up cheaper per person than three bus tickets (about 90 MAD total) and drops you much closer to your gate.
Furthermore, dragging large roller suitcases over the uneven cobblestones of the Medina alleyways in 35°C midday sun is exhausting. Bus 19 is ideal if you carry a backpack or cabin duffel.
The Stress-Free Private Transfer Solution
For many travelers—especially after a long international flight or landing after dark—the relief of walking straight through the airport doors to a smiling driver holding a sign with your name is worth every extra euro.

Welcome Pickups provides pre-paid, flat-rate transport with English & French-speaking drivers. They monitor your flight number for delays, wait up to 60 minutes after landing free of charge, and walk you directly to your vehicle in the private transport bay.

3 Common RAK Arrival Traps (And How to Deflect Them)
None of these situations are physically dangerous; Moroccan hospitality is legendary. However, arriving tired makes travelers vulnerable to paying triple the going rate.
1. “The Meter is Broken”
Drivers at the airport will almost always claim their compteur (meter) is inactive or does not apply for airport trips.
2. “Your Riad is Burned Down / Closed”
A tout near your gate drop-off claims that your riad had a fire or is closed due to renovations, offering to guide you to their “uncle’s superior hotel.”
3. The 100 MAD Luggage Porter
Handcart wheelers at the gate quickly hoist your bags onto their cart, wheel them 150 meters to your riad, and demand 100–150 MAD per piece.
